These reference materials consist of natural sea water sterilized by a combination of filtration, ultra-violet radiation and addition of mercuric chloride. They are bottled in 500 mL borosilicate glass bottles sealed with greased ground glass stoppers. Each batch prepared is then analyzed for salinity, total dissolved inorganic carbon and total alkalinity.
