Reference materials Certified reference materials (based on natural sea water) are available routinely for total dissolved inorganic carbon and for total alkalinity. Work is in progress to certify these materials for the carbon-13 content of the total dissolved inorganic carbon. Prototype reference materials are available in limited quantities for pH. These are based on Tris buffers in synthetic sea water.
